It’s understandable that WWE is pulling out all the stops to make RAW’s 25th Anniversary a memorable occasion – and rightly so. The red brand has been the company’s flagship program for almost a quarter of a century and is the longest-running weekly episodic show in television history. So, it shouldn’t come as a surprise to hear that WWE are bringing back some of their most legendary superstars to celebrate the event – and that includes The Undertaker.
However, while we would have totally been expecting the Deadman to make an appearance any other year, this will be his first TV appearance since his apparent retirement at WrestleMania 33. So, we have to wonder how his return will be treated, and what he will actually do when he returns in January.
Is He Returning To Officially Confirm His Retirement?
After his defeat to Roman Reigns at WrestleMania, The Undertaker left his gloves, coat and hat in the middle of the ring before emotionally departing from the arena one more time. As he descended into the smoke, we were left wondering if we had truly seen the last of the Phenom. But as WWE have yet to officially confirm this, we’ve been left unsure what to think.
However, perhaps that is exactly what The Undertaker himself intends to do when he returns. After all, the 25th Anniversary of RAW takes place six days before the Road to WrestleMania starts at the Royal Rumble. And the final stop on that “Road” is the WWE Hall Of Fame. So it’s possible that the Deadman may officially confirm his retirement on RAW, leading to him headlining the Hall Of Fame’s class of 2018 – a fitting tribute to the wrestling legend.
Could It Lead To One More Match At WrestleMania?
With The Undertaker set to return right before the Road to WrestleMania kicks off, it will undoubtedly fuel speculation that the veteran is returning to plant the seeds for another match at next year’s WrestleMania. Having been semi-retired since 2010, he annually returned to WWE between January and March to build towards a match on the Grandest Stage of Them All. And the timing for this year’s surprise return is eerily reminiscent of years gone by.

Could the Lord of Darkness return to announce his participation in the Royal Rumble, much like he did this year (the Rumble does take place a mere six days later)? Or perhaps his promo could get cut short by another superstar, giving him a potential rival for WrestleMania.
While we all quickly assumed that his farewell-like exit at this year’s WrestleMania signalled his retirement, WWE have remained purposely ambiguous regarding his in-ring future. So, if he is physically ready and in shape, then we may very well see the Deadman return to the ring for one more match.
Will He Exact Revenge On Roman Reigns?
Since defeating The Undertaker, Roman Reigns has annoyingly reminded the world of his accomplishment. While WWE have yet to confirm the Phenom’s retirement, Reigns has had no problem claiming that he was the man to “retire The Undertaker”. Moreover, the Big Dog now claims that the squared circle is now his yard.
Despite supposedly being a face, Reigns promos tend to verge on being heelish, and are undoubtedly disrespectful to the Deadman.
With that in mind, it’s easy to see why some of the WWE Universe is convinced that The Undertaker will seek out Reigns when he returns. Remember, he attacked Brock Lesnar back in 2015 – a result of Paul Heyman’s constant reminders about The Beast’s victory over the WWE legend a year earlier. We were all starting to believe that he was officially retired then, but his eventual return surprised us. Thus, he could very well do the same thing to Reigns next year.
After all, when WWE made the announcement regarding RAW’s 25th Anniversary, they featured both The Undertaker and Reigns out front and center, ahead of everyone else. Could they have been teasing us with the suggestion of another possible altercation between the two?
After months of uncertainty, The Undertaker’s return to WWE is finally on the horizon. Whether or not it actually leads to anything for the legend remains to be seen, but it will undoubtedly be a treat to see him appear at this historic event.
As he is the only remaining active superstar who appeared on RAW’s very first episode back in 1993, I couldn’t think of a better event to mark the return of the legendary Undertaker.
