Vettel allegedly receives offers from McLaren and Renault

Sebastian Vettel is considering his future with Ferrari after receiving an offer from his current employer, but the German has also allegedly been sent proposals from McLaren and Renault for 2021.

Vettel’s current contract with the Scuderia expires at the end of this season.

But according to famed Italian blogger and Ferrari insider Leo Turrini, the four-time world champion is considering whether to accept or refuse a new one-year deal tabled by the House of Maranello that also involves a significant pay cut.

Di Resta: Vettel has no say in future with Ferrari

“Scuderia Ferrari offered a contract renewal to Sebastian Vettel for one year, but they asked him to answer before the end of June, so before the start of the new championship,” Turrini told Sky Italia.

“Vettel’s doubts come from the fact that he is not sure that there won’t be a difference in driver management.

“We have to take into account the fact that Charles Leclerc has a contract until 2024.

“It’s not an offer that makes Seb the wingman of Charles, because [Ferrari CEO] Camilleri told me that it’s impossible to go to a four-time World Champion and tell him to be the wingman of someone who won two races.”

Turrini contends that both McLaren and Renault have submitted preliminary offers to Vettel, as both outfits consider contingency plans in the event that either Carlos Sainz or Daniel Ricciardo is recruited by Ferrari to replace a departed Vettel.

“I know that Vettel has some contract offers from Renault and McLaren,” insisted Turrini.

“But I don’t know much he is interested in them. We have to see what Seb will answer. If Seb declines, I think Ferrari would go after Carlos Sainz.”

Needless to say, all of the above should be taken with a grain of salt.

Despite the gossip, the most likely scenario is a status quo at Ferrari, with Vettel accepting a significantly reduced retainer for 2021 although the Scuderia could well accept its driver’s request for a two-year deal.
