Friday’s midday briefing was nice and short.

Asked to comment on Tony Blair’s call for Remain voters to “rise up” against Brexit, the Commission politely declined to take the bait and speak out on the reversibility of the Brexit process. “We wait for Article 50 to arrive,” was the response.

The Commission also said it agreed with the decision of the Lithuanian authorities to suspend for three months a Russian-language TV channel named RTR Planeta. Vilnius said of the TV station, which broadcast from Sweden, “there have been manifest, serious and grave infringements of the prohibition of incitement to hatred in programs broadcast.”

Interns’ moment

On Friday morning, the European Ombudsman recommended that the European External Action Service pay its around 600 trainees in over 100 EU delegation across the world.

“We took note of the assessment,” said EEAS spokeswoman Maja Kocijančič, adding that the EU’s diplomatic service is discussing ways to review the scheme and will potentially ask for the EU 2018 budget to include financial payments for interns.

“Unpaid internships were not invented by us. It is a tradition for several international organizations like the United Nations,” said Kocijančič.

Commission’s agenda

There’s a busy weekend ahead for some commissioners, with First Vice President Frans Timmermans, EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini and security union commissioner Julian King attending the annual Munich Security Conference.

Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker will next week meet with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, attends the Belgian federal parliament and meet Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny. The full agenda is here.
