When Nathalie Scetbon’s daughter told her she wanted cosmetic surgery, she and her husband took it in their stride.

“She started saying she wanted a nose job and her ears pinned back. I thought it was typical teenage angst,” said Mrs Scetbon, 48.

A year earlier, her 15-year old daughter had started classes in a comfortable state secondary school in Paris’s cosseted Le Marais district.

However, in the space of a year, the teenager went from enjoying classes to deep unhappiness….
