NBC NHL reporter Pierre McGuire is recovering from prostate cancer surgery, the network announced Wednesday night.
McGuire is known for his “Inside the Glass” segments, in which he talks to coaches during breaks in the game.
“I’m back doing radio and I’m watching games every night,” McGuire told USA Today. “I can’t travel right now. That’s what is holding me back.”
McGuire told the paper he had the surgery earlier this month after a regular physical showed some warning signs. It was Stage 1 cancer, no chemotherapy is planned and McGuire plans to return to NBC for next month’s Olympics in South Korea.
Ed Olczyk, who worked on the same broadcasting team with McGuire and Doc Emrick, was diagnosed with colon cancer five months ago. McGuire said Olczyk told him: “’You got to fight and stay positive’ and I said, ‘I agree.’”
McGuire spent time as a coach and in the front office of the Penguins and Whalers before becoming a broadcaster.
