Bringing light to the Commission’s HQ.

Are you capable of lighting up a grey day? Can you bring a smile to the face of a haughty huissier or a down-in-the-dumps driver? Do you know that OLED stands for organic light-emitting diodes?

Then perhaps you should respond to the European Commission’s call for sponsors, which it issued last week (15 March), inviting experts in solid-state lighting technologies to mount “innovative lighting solutions” on the ground floor of the Commission’s headquarters, the Berlaymont.

It’s all the bright (at least 300 lux) idea of the Commission’s department for information society and media, which wants to stage a pilot project in the Berlaymont. Sponsors are promised three invitations for the opening event with European commissioner Neelie Kroes, a mention in the press releases issued at the beginning and end of the pilot, a website devoted to the project…and the chance to put up a poster and distribute brochures. The draft schedule suggests that the lighting will be installed in August, when most people are away on holiday, though it does not say how long the lighting has to last.

Proposals are supposed to be submitted to the Commission’s photonics unit by 15 May. Suggestions as to what other sponsorships might be sought for Commission buildings should be sent to Entre Nous in your own time.
