John Cena Explains Why He Brought Back The “Doctor Of Thuganomics”, Claims WWE Doesn’t Need Him Anymore

In case you missed it, John Cena made a surprise return to the wrestling world this Sunday night at WrestleMania, bringing back his classic “Doctor of Thuganomics” character made popular during his early run on WWE Smackdown.

After interrupting a musical performance by Elias, Elias and Elias on the grandest stage of them all, Cena caught up with cameras backstage and explained why he jumped at the opportunity to bring back his old school character.

“I didn’t want to take a ton of time away from the event, or the Superstars who have earned the chance to go out there and do what they do,” Cena stated, adding that he didn’t want to do anything “via satellite”.

The 16-time world champion also grew very reflective, claiming that after spending years helping sell tickets to WrestleMania, the company is in a position where they don’t need him anymore.

“My contribution on television has helped sell tickets to this event. This year, that was not true. It is still completely sold-out, and everyone was still on the edge of their seat. I’m at a very good perspective with the fact that they don’t need me, and they’re doing just fine without me. I’m very grateful to be asked to be a very small part. I hope it meant a lot to [the fans]because they have no idea how much it meant to me.”
