French Players’ Union awards nominees announced

The French players’ union, the UNFP, have announced their nominees for their annual awards, which are recognised as the most prestigious for the football season in France.

The ceremony will take place on May 15. Last year’s player of the year award was won by Kylian Mbappé, with Monaco’s Aurélien Tchouaméni being named the young player of the year for the 2020-21 season.

Title-winning manager Christophe Galtier was the manager of the year, with Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema also retaining his 2019 title as the best Frenchman abroad.

Ligue 1 young player of the year

Arnaud Kalimuendo (Lens), Castello Lukeba (Lyon), William Saliba (Marseille), Nuno Mendes (PSG), Khéphren Thuram (Nice).

D1 Arkema (women’s first division) player of the year

Kadidiatou Diani (PSG), Grace Geyoro (PSG), Marie-Antoinette Katoto (PSG), Catarina Macario (Lyon), Clara Matéo (Paris FC).

Best Frenchman playing abroad

Karim Benzema (Real Madrid), Ousmane Dembélé (Barcelona), Théo Hernandez (Milan), N’Golo Kanté (Chelsea), Mike Maignan (Milan).

Ligue 2 player of the year

Gaëtan Charbonnier (Auxerre),  Rhys Healey (Toulouse), Gauthier Hein (Auxerre),  Youssouf M’Changama (Guingamp),  Branco van den Boomen (Toulouse).

Ligue 1 goalkeeper of the year

Walter Benítez (Nice), Gianluigi Donnarumma (PSG), Alban Lafont (Nantes), Pau López (Marseille), Matz Selcs (Strasbourg).

Ligue 1 manager of the year

Bruno Génésio (Rennes), Christophe Galtier (Nice), Antoine Kombouaré (Nantes), Jorge Sampaoli (Marseille), Julien Stéphan (Strasbourg).

Ligue 1 player of the year

Wissam Ben Yedder (Monaco), Kylian Mbappé (PSG), Dimitri Payet (Marseille), Lucas Paquetá (Lyon), Martin Terrier (Rennes).
