Christophe Galtier reveals details of PSG’s “daring” switch to 4-3-3

Christophe Galtier described Paris-Saint Germain’s switch to a 4-3-3 against Marseille in Le Classique last weekend as a “daring bet” in a pre-match press conference on Thursday.

Up until last weekend, Galtier had deployed his side in a 3-4-3 formation, but due to several absences in defence and a lack of fluidity, the change was made. PSG had played in a 4-3-3 under Mauricio Pocchetino last season, although the former Tottenham Hotspur boss was criticised for not getting the most out of his front three (Neymar, Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé), at least partially due to the team’s formation.

However, in a tight game, PSG beat Marseille in their new look set-up, with Neymar scoring the only goal of the game. “It was a daring bet, especially against Marseille, a very organised team and difficult to play against,” said Galtier ahead of PSG’s clash against Ajaccio on Friday.

He continued, “We have been thinking about doing it for some time. We had two sessions [in a 4-3-3]. I felt that it was time to change the formation. I am not surprised by my players’ ability to adapt. They did what I asked of them.”
