Boris Johnson claims Brexit mandate as Conservative Party wins by a landslide in UK

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson claimed a “mandate” to accomplish Brexit after the Conservative Party had a major victory in the country’s election.

“This one nation conservative government has been given a powerful new mandate to get Brexit done and not just to get Brexit done but to unite this country,” Johnson said, according to a video posted by The Associated Press.

Conservatives won 358 seats in Parliament while the largest opposition, the Labour Party, had just 203, with 642 out of 650 results declared, according to the AP.

Johnson has been a staunch supporter of the United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the European Union and has campaigned on getting Brexit done.

Earlier this year, his attempt to leave the EU was met with some resistance in Parliament, and he had called for the Thursday election, which was reportedly held almost two years ahead of schedule.

Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn called the result  “very disappointing” and said he would not lead the party in its next election, the AP reported.
