Three pins fuel Vikings to 36-6 win over Minot State
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – After a month without competition, Augustana returned to the mat and notched a resounding 36-6 win over Minot State on Sunday afternoon. Led by three pins, the Vikings improved to 6-2 on the season with a perfect 2-0 record in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference competition while the Beavers fall to 0-6, 0-3 in the NSIC.
Starting at 165 pounds, Tim Weber set the tone for the Vikings with his first pin of the season, taking down Donovan Williams in 1:02. The Beavers drew within three points when Matt Fetterly scored on an escape and added a point with riding time over Drake Fanslau for a 2-0 decision at 174 pounds, but that was the closes Minot State would get in the dual.
With a 6-3 lead, Sean Derry (184) scored three first-period takedowns, pushing his team-leading total to 67, and eventually pinned his opponent 1:19 into the match, giving Augustana a 12-3 lead in the dual.
Ranked fifth in the latest NCAA Division II rankings at 197 pounds, Jayd Docken stayed undefeated on the season, scoring three takedowns on the way to an 8-3 decision win. Michael Lowman gave the Vikings an 18-3 lead entering intermission with a 6-1 decision victory at 285 pounds.
TJ North pushed the Augustana lead to 24-3 with a forfeit victory setting up Morgan Engbrecht to wrestle at 133 pounds. Engbrecht, wrestling up a class, scored a pair of takedowns in the first two periods then added two more points with a third-period reversal to win a 6-1 decision.
Jacob Anderson (141) notched a first-period takedown and added his team-leading 16th reversal in the second period for a 4-0 lead. With an escape in the final period and a takedown plus riding time, Anderson notched his 15th victory of the season with an 8-2 decision.
At 149 pounds, Shawn Hatlestad and Jon Wilson were tied 0-0 after the first period in an evenly-matched bout. Electing to start the period on bottom, Hatlestad scored on an escape, but Wilson took a 2-1 lead on a takedown with just one second remaining in the second period. Wilson started the final period on bottom and Hatlestad nearly scored on several near falls before he pinned Wilson at 6:26.
The Vikings led 36-3 entering the final bout, pitting Bradyn Neises and Ricards Avakovs at 157 pounds. Avakovs raced out to a 9-2 lead after the first period and held off Neises’ comeback attempt, winning a 14-9 decision and bringing the final match score to 36-6 in favor of the Vikings.
Augustana now hosts Southwest Minnesota State in a Tuesday-night NSIC dual on Jan. 14 at 7 p.m. in the Elmen Center.
