A gunman killed an officer in Russia’s FSB security service after opening fire near the agency’s headquarters in Moscow on Thursday, injuring several others, according to Agence France-Presse.
The FSB said the lone gunman was “neutralized” shortly after opening fire near the facility in Lubyanka Square. “An unknown individual opened fire near building … There are casualties. The identity of the criminal is being established. The criminal has been neutralised,” the FSB said in a statement, according to AFP.
The FSB confirmed the single death but denied initial reports of multiple shooters.

Russia’s Investigative Committee has launched an investigation into the incident and an “attempt on life of a law enforcement employee” but has not disclosed the number of casualties. The Russian health ministry said five people are being treated for injuries but did not specify their status or whether they were civilians.
The shooting occurred a day before Russia’s Security Services Day and the same month that a Russian court sentenced 11 people to prison terms of varying lengths in connection with a bombing at the Saint Petersburg metro that killed 15 people.
