Andoni Zubizarreta in danger of losing his Sporting Director role at Marseille

RMC and L’Équipe report that Marseille owner Frank McCourt’s clan is considering the removal of Sporting Director Andoni Zubizarreta in the near future.

The Spaniard is fed up with the delicate financial situation that the club is in and the fact that he has not be in complete control of transfer dealings for the last two and a half years.

The American investor feels that the €200m he invested was spent too quickly, without any return on his investment. Zubizaretta’s main priority this summer was to raise funds through player sales, after McCourt had to make an €80m injection in June to keep the books balanced.

The Spaniard’s difficulties in getting rid of unwanted players like Grégory Sertic and Kevin Strootman and being unable to sell bankable assets (Morgan Sanson and Florian Thauvin). Zubizaretta feels that the job of selling players should fall to agents, but this posturing has angered Marseille internally.

At the end of this summer window, Zubizarreta flirted with resigning, but he also feels unjustly treated, with the majority of player investments pushed in the last 2.5 years by Rudi Garcia.

Contacted by RMC tonight, Marseille denied that any conversations were open to negotiate the possible departure of Zubizarreta, without denying that the Sporting Director situation was unstable.

Zubizarreta was on holiday last week, but was present at Dijon for the 0-0 draw. For how much longer will he be in and around the club?
