Jackrabbits win all three at South Dakota Showcase

SIOUX FALLS – The South Dakota State University wrestling team got back on the winning track in dominating fashion Sunday afternoon, winning all three of its duals at the South Dakota Showcase held inside the Sanford Pentagon.

The Jackrabbits improved to 4-5 in duals this season with its three wins over in-state competition. SDSU wrestlers combined to total a 24-6 combined record on the day, winning six matches by pin, four by technical fall and five by major decision on the afternoon.

Using a lineup made up mostly of reserves, the Jackrabbits opened the quadrangular with a 48-0 shutout of Dakota Wesleyan. The Jackrabbits received pins from 157-pounder Logan Peterson and 197-pounder Josh Casperson and added two more victories by forfeit. Peterson’s pin of 24 seconds was the fastest of the day for SDSU.

Jaxon Fitzgerald (149) and Joe Brewster (165) each won by technical fall while Spencer Derifield (174) and Alex Macki (285) posted wins by major decision.

SDSU spotted Northern State an early 9-3 lead through the first three matches of the second dual of the day for both teams, but the Jackrabbits picked up bonus points in four of the next five bouts to cruise to a 36-12 victory. Alex Kocer started the Jackrabbit string of victories with a forfeit at 149 pounds, which was followed by Logan Peterson’s second pin of the day at 157 pounds. David Kocer and Brady Ayers notched back-to-back pins at 174 and 184 pounds, respectively.

In the final dual of the afternoon, Augustana won the opening match by decision at 125 pounds, but the Jackrabbits reeled off six consecutive wins, including five of the bonus-point variety, to post a 31-9 win. Brance Simms, ranked 15th at 133 pounds, began the SDSU winning streak with a 13-4 major decision over David Potratz. Seth Gross followed with a major decision of his own, while Alex Kocer won by fall and sixth-ranked Cody Pack added a win by technical fall at 157 pounds. Luke Zilverberg came through with a 13-3 major decision at 165 pounds, with David Kocer completing the string with an 8-1 decision over Tim Weber in the 174-pound weight class.

Nate Rotert, ranked 13th at 197 pounds, closed out the Jackrabbit victories on the day with a 19-4 technical fall win over Clayton Wahlstrom.

Complete South Dakota Showcase Results

SDSU returns to dual action next Sunday (Dec. 13), hosting North Dakota State. The dual is slated to begin at 4:30 p.m. and will follow the Jackrabbit men’s basketball game against UC Santa Barbara at Frost Arena.
