Gophers Welcome Boilermakers to The Pav

The Golden Gophers return home for the first time in three weekends to face the Purdue Boilermakers in another Big Ten showdown. The Gophers take on the Boilermakers for the first time since Jan. 29, 2017 as they aim to notch a fourth consecutive Big Ten victory.

The two Big Ten schools last met in 2017 with Minnesota coming out on top 29-12. Ethan Lizak, Mitch McKee, Tommy Thorn, and Carson Brolsma all competed in that dual with Lizak and Thorn coming out victorious.

This edition of the matchup between Minnesota and Purdue has potential to include four ranked bouts.

At 174-pounds Devin Skatzka and Dylan Lydy will have a rematch from November after Skatzka defeated Lydy by decision in the consolation bracket of the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. Minnesota finished in 6th at the competition while Purdue placed

Extra Activities
The Gophers host their second youth clinic of the season prior to the dual. The even offers children the chance to workout with some Gopher wrestlers before enjoying the Big Ten dual.

Registered youth teams and accompanying coaches may attend the dual for free. Click on the “Youth Day” tab for more information.

There will also be a promotion where fans can come to the Pav and donate a can of non-perishable goods in exchange for a discounted ticket.

Skatzka on a roll
174-pound Devin Skatzka is having a great season in his first year as a Gopher after transferring from Indiana University. The redshirt junior has racked up 20 wins, including eight straight, to accompany his eight major decisions and four technical falls.

Last weekend against Wisconsin Skatzka tookdown Patrick Spray quickly before repeatedly turning him for four four-point nearfalls. The dual ended at 18-0 before the end of the first stanza.

Record breaking freshman
Heavyweight Gable Steveson continues to make his presence felt in college wrestling with his 23rd consecutive win to begin his career and 10th victory over a ranked wrestlers already this season.

With his 23rd straight win Steveson joined a tie in 21st place alongside Jason Davids and Tim Hartung. With one more victory he will move up another spot to a tie with Bobbe Lowe and Scott Schiller.

Former heavyweight Cole Konrad is the school’s all-time leader with 74 consecutive victories between November 2005 and March 2007.

The Lizard and the Thorn
Redshirt seniors Ethan Lizak and Tommy Thorn, 133-pounds and 149-pounds respecitvely, continue to climb up the Gophers all-time wins list. With 106 victories Lizak now sits at 38th place while Thorn, with 86 victories, sits just outside the top-fifty.

The two friends have been on campus together for five years now and are leaders on and off the mat for the Gophers.

Next Up
The Gophers then hit the road one final time on February 8 to take on Nebraska before taking on Maryland that following Sunday. The Gophers finish out the season wrestling Indiana at the Pav and Rider at Northrop Auditorium on campus.
