American fashion photographer Arthur Elgort, the grandfather of the Fashion
Snapshot, is the subject of a new retrospective.
After last year’s launch of his monograph Arthur Elgort: The Big Picture,
his book comes to life in Milan this month, with an exhibition celebrating
50 years of work at the Gallery Carla Sozzani from
Born in 1940, Arthur Elgort has frequently worked with Conde Nast,
publishing his first cover for Vogue Paris the early 1990s. The exhibition
also features the original photos from his campaigns for the big couture
houses such as Chanel, Valentino and Yves Saint Laurent.
The New York-based photographer created a new photographic style known as
the ‘snapshot,’ a spontaneous photo that captured the moment, characterized
by a naturally lit environment and models in minimal make-up.
Elgort was known for taking to the streets of New York to shoot models like
Christy Turlington, Kate Moss, Patti Hansen, Linda Evangelista and, more
recently, Karlie Kloss. Vintage fashion photography not to miss.
The exhibition runs until April 6th at Gallery Carla Sozzani.
