As the reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth was raised with an understanding of royal rules, but other members of the family are, frankly, luckier to have grown up without them. Both Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle weren’t exactly on track to become royals until well into adulthood, when they met their respective princes. And it means they had a lot of catching up to do in the protocol department.
In newly resurfaced photos from Meghan’s 2015 holiday trip to Malta, she looks as cheery as ever, but her clothes wouldn’t make it past Kensington Palace’s gates today. In the pictures, Markle sparkles in a black turtleneck and … ripped jeans!! Cue the gasps.

Alright, not exactly the most shocking piece of clothing, but definitely one that wouldn’t make it to a royal Christmas with Queen E’s approval. The same goes for her dark nail polish, which is a unique royal beauty don’t.
We doubt Markle cares much, though. How was she supposed to know she’d eventually marry an IRL prince? Plus, it’s not like her entire wardrobe would leave the queen balking. While she was in Malta, exploring her family roots (her great-grandmother, Mary Bird, was born there in the mid-1800s), she walked down cobblestone streets wearing the same kind of trench style she favors to this day.

“When asked to go to Malta to not only discover the beautiful island, but also the land from which my great grandmother hailed, I said yes without hesitation. It’s Malta!” Markle wrote at the time on her now-defunct blog, The Tig, adding that “it felt like home” and she definitely wants to go back.

In addition to using her holiday time to explore, she also wore a Maltese għonnella, a form of women’s headdress that’s unique to the area.

Her vacation wardrobe might not be royal holiday-ready today, but let’s hope she re-visits Malta sometime with Prince Harry and Baby Sussex tagging along. Għonnella required.
