Hello! Welcome to another edition of The Monitor, WIRED's pop culture roundup. What's happening in the news today? Plenty, actually: Blade Runner 2049 director Denis Villeneuve is working on a Dune television show in addition to his Dune movie; the cowriter of Coco is about to go to Narnia; and Facebook is commissioning even more shows. Let’s tune in.
There's a New Dune Series in the Works
For those who just can't get enough Dune, we have some good news. In addition to the new film set to be released in 2020, WarnerMedia announced this week that it is also working on a companion series for its streaming service. Titled Dune: The Sisterhood, the show will focus on the mysterious order of women known as the Bene Gesserit. Denis Villeneuve, who is directing the film adaptation of Frank Herbert's novel, will also direct the pilot of the series and executive produce. "The Bene Gesserit have always been fascinating to me," Villeneuve told Variety. "Focusing a series around that powerful order of women seemed not only relevant and inspiring, but a dynamic setting for the television series."
Coco's Cowriter Is Adapting Chronicles of Narnia for Netflix
First of all, a primer: Netflix is currently working on a massive adaptation of the Chronicles of Narnia books that will include films and at least one series. Now that that's out of the way, here's the news: The streaming service just tapped Coco cowriter Matthew Aldrich to mastermind the endeavor, handling development on all of the various adaptations. Netflix nabbed the rights to the seven-book Narnia series from the C.S. Lewis Company in 2018.
Facebook Is Going to Make Even More Shows
Hey, so, you know Watch, Facebook's video platform? Welp, it's about to get even more programming. The company announced this week that, in addition to rebooting The Real World, the social network is also working on a documentary series set in the Amazon jungle called Curse of Akakor and shows from BuzzFeed, Tastemade, and Studio71. Get ready to spend even more time on Facebook than you already do.
