L’Équipe reported this morning that Thiago Silva and Marquinhos were forced to separate Edinson Cavani and Neymar in the dressing room on Sunday night before a physical aggression occurred after their on-pitch arguments over who should take set-pieces was made embarrassingly public during their encounter with Lyon.
Cavani swiftly left the Parc des Princes after the incident without speaking to the media. The Uruguayan international has since played down the events, saying the following to Uruguayan radio:
“I do not know why all these stories have been created, these are normal things that happen in football.”
It is believed that Cavani has no intention of backing down from his desire to continue to take penalties and free-kicks, especially when there is a €1m bonus in his contract for finishing up as the Ligue 1 top scorer.
There is also increased anxiety amongst the PSG squad of the increased influence of the growing Brazilian cohort within the dressing room who are increasingly seeking to take control of the decision-making process. Not only is there Neymar, Lucas, Thiago Silva, Marquinhos and Dani Alves in the dressing room, but now Maxwell as a quasi-Sporting Director.
Unai Emery must put his foot down either way, this notion of “I will let them sort it out between themselves” clearly is not working.
