With one month left until WWE returns to pay-per-view with Clash of Champions, we thought it would be fun to speculate wildly about what the match card might look like, as well as discuss the matches that have already been revealed.
So far, officially, the only thing on the table is the King of the Ring finals. That said, the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter has confirmed that the following matches are currently on the schedule for the September 15 event:

Universal Championship Match
– Seth Rollins (c) vs. Braun Strowman
WWE Championship Match
– Kofi Kingston (c) vs. Randy Orton
– King of the Ring Finals
Raw Women’s Championship Match
– Becky Lynch (c) vs. Sasha Banks
It stands to reason that the rematch between Kingston and Orton will likely have some sort of stipulation attached. Given how their SummerSlam match unfortunately ended, it could be a Falls Count Anywhere match, a “No Count-Outs” match, or one of the hundred variations of a No DQ match that WWE rotates through.
Given that the PPV is in Charlotte, North Carolina the obvious challenger to Bayley’s Smackdown Women’s Championship is Charlotte Flair. And given that she beat Trish Stratus at SummerSlam, then tapped out Bayley’s last challenger clean on Smackdown Live, that would seem to indicate they’re heading in that direction. That’ll mean all four of the Horsewomen will be the focus of the women’s titles. Nothing is set in stone though.
It doesn’t seem like Ricochet and AJ Styles are done, but personally if they’re going to go another round I feel they MUST add some kind of stipulation to keep it interesting. I don’t know what the real number is, off hand, but it seems like they’ve had about a dozen matches in a really short span of time, and unless Ricochet actually manages to win the title back, I just don’t see how they’re helping him in the long-run.
Who knows what WWE is doing with the Roman Reigns mystery. The original plan was of course Reigns vs. Daniel Bryan at SummerSlam, but they pushed it back because the story didn’t arrive where they needed it to in time, and wanted to give it room to breath. That said, Vince McMahon changes his mind eight times a day, Buddy Murphy has been mixed up in it, and it really could go in any direction before we actually get to Clash of Champions. The safe money is definitely on Reigns & Murphy teaming up against Bryan and Rowan in a tag team match on Smackdown at some point.
The rest of the card is probably going to be shaped by the end result of the King of the Ring tournament. Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Mustafa Ali for the Intercontinental Championship is possible, but it’s equally possible that they’ve given up on that and gone a different direction.
We’ll probably see a match with The Fiend. We had better, anyhow. Nothing has really been teased yet outside of an exchange of Tweets between Bray Wyatt and Aleister Black, although the impetus is the WWE 2K20 video game so who knows. It does seem a bit early to do that match. The Fiend is going to keep winning, but Black is on the same path and needs to be protected and made to look strong. If they want to do a long-term program between the two I’m on board.
Finally, it’s a pretty safe bet that Shane McMahon is not going to let Kevin Owens actually win the King of the Ring tournament. I don’t know if that means he makes it to the finals and they do the angle at Clash of Champions, or if he gets screwed over in the next few weeks, and it leads to a rematch between the two. Knowing WWE this is probably leading to Hell in a Cell, even though they literally just did the exact same match a few years ago.
